Government and Business Papers

Welcome to our section covering Government and Business Papers. We are going to start with British documents that refer to Glaxo and Myodil.

I have chosen not to publish the entire Government File on Myodil, yet, as reading all of it is unnecessary. What I have done is to publish extracts from letters and other papers, together with my own notes on them in order to make it easier to follow the history of this toxic pollutant.

If anybody wants copies of the originals then I will provide them free of charge, just include a stamped addressed envelope please. But, if you are prepared to become an active protestor, there is a better way in which you can signal the importance to you of this Myodil/Arachnoiditis issue to the Government.

Simply send off for a copy of their Myodil file. You are entitled to it as a UK citizen. Should you meet any resistance please email me. I will forward a copy of the emails that produced my copy from an unhappy Medicines Control Agency forthwith. The Ombudsman played a large part in assisting me.

As you progress through these pages you will find my comments in RED. I have also emphasised relevant statements in the text by making them Bold.

There are references, in the texts to follow, which refer to other documents that we have yet to publish, this will be rectified shortly.

Document No. 1 -
Glaxo Fax avoids the Facts
Martin Sutton of Glaxo to David James Smith of The Sunday Times, 2nd September 1997

Document No.1A -
The Questions Answered(?)
Glaxo's answers to The Sunday Times' Questions

Document No.2 -
GlaxoSmithKline Fax of April 2001
Four years on and the story remains the same. This document, which also heralds the merger between SmithKlineBeetcham and Glaxo, reiterates the 1997 fax. Nobody has noticed that they have a problem

Document No.3 -
Package Inserts 1971
So having got this far, we now know that Glaxo, in whichever guise are saying the same, thing, "We warned everybody about the dangers of Arachnoiditis on the 1971 Package Inserts".

Here we publish the relevant sections of the Pakage Inserts which form their defence against culpability. Note the differences before moving on to our final document in this series.

Document No.4 -
The Doctor tells the tale - 1972
Extracts from the letters of Dr Snell - Glaxo's Chief Medical Officer in 1972
Replying to various concerned hospital doctors and the Committee on the Safety of Medicines, he attempts to explain away instances of Adverse Drugs Reactions following Myodil myelograms.
Please note that he never brings the readers' attentions to those all important changes on the 1971 Package Inserts.

Document No.5 -
Extract from the Adverse Drug Event Report
Authored again by Dr Snell of Glaxo this was sent to the CSM listing the Adverse Drug Events involving Myodil known to the Company. The reader should note that there was no appropriate or reliable ADR reporting system at that time.
