Extract from an Adverse Drug Reaction Report
Authored again by Dr Snell of Glaxo this was sent to the
CSM listing the Adverse Drug Events involving Myodil known
to the Company. The reader should note that there was no
appropriate or reliable ADR reporting system at that time.
1949 March
Convulsions - death
1949 April Sme patients - pyrexia and leg stiffness.
1951 February Inquest - Male - Verdict - Infection following
Myodil administration
1963 Mar 2 patients - very slow improvement
1964 Apr/June Allergic reactions - 2 patients. 1 male patient
(spinal tumour?) meningitis to death
1964 Aug Pain in back and legs. Persisted for 15 weeks.
1969 Sept Inter cranial pressure. Reaction blamed on Methyl
prednisolone also administered.
1969 Nov Male. Tetany - Death 5 days later.
1970 Feb Severe reactions - chemical myelitis.
1970 April 5 patients - blamed on anaphylactic shock.
1970 Nov Male - CSF - Sterile Arachnoiditis
1970 Nov Untoward reaction.(?)
1970 Dec Positive to dermal Myodil - not iodine.
1970 Dec Pyrexia reported from 3 centres. No further explanations
or numbers.
1971 Apr Increased incidence of reactions. Severe arachnoiditis.
No numbers given but references are plural.
1971 No numbers or details. Reaction described as meningitis
(arachnoidtis)
1971 May Reactions in 3 patients.
1971 Death - No other details on form.
1971 No details of report just the date.
1971 Nov Back pain. 7 patients. No further details given.
1971 Dec Arachnoiditis. Present batch seems to be unusually
irritating.
1972 All year 32 Adverse Effects of various degrees reported.
All refer to Arachnoiditis symptoms.
Some are multiple reports.
In addition to this there were many cases reporting adverse
effects from Myodil/Pantopaque in the literature.
