WORKING CAREER

1971 - 77 ROYAL NAVY

Writer and Leading Writer. Administrative Duties. Dealing with PAYE (up to 400 accounts), Personnel Documentation, 2 Tours of Duty on Admirals' Staffs. Drafted Operation Orders for Mobilisation Exercise and Fireman's Strike. Awarded Grant from Herbert Lott Fund for quality of work.

1977 - 78 Hopkinson's Valves of Huddersfield

UK Spares Sales Co-ordinator. Responsible for sales of kits of spares to UK Power Stations. Using IBM Mainframe computer.

1978 - 81 David Brown Tractors

Purchase Expediter. Responsible for co-ordinating supplies to the factory of Wiring Bundles, Exhausts and Pipe Fittings. Successfully undertook Purchasing Course and completed a major project to locate stray stocks and overcalls. Using IBM Mainframe computer.

1981 - 83 G. R. Spinks & Co, Okehampton, Devon

Employed originally as Storeman. Duties before leaving included co-coordinating supplies of all components required for manufacturing, purchasing new items as required and controlling the transport requirements to and from the factory. Supervisory duties-two other members of Stores staff and two Drivers.

1983 - 84 Little Cottage Confectionary, Okehampton, Devon

Factory Supervisor and Co-ordinator. Responsible for 7 members of staff. Ensuring all components required for manufacture of products were available when required. Collating and controlling the production programme. Dealing with Human Resource issues, including interviewing and employment of new staff.

1984 Delta Dairies Ltd, Okehampton, Devon

Manager: Setting up an experimental plant, employing staff (8), purchasing ingredients and controlling the manufacturing process for a project producing Feta Cheese from milk powder. Project folded, although a manufacturing success, due to lack of investment in hygiene.

1985 - 89 Mike's Fruit & Veg, Lo-Cost Supermarket, Okehampton, Devon

Own successful business, run as a franchise within the supermarket. Contract withdrawn when Argyle Group Head Office no longer wanted franchisees in-store company wide.

1989 - 98 McVities Frozen Foods, Okehampton Devon

Started on line work producing and packing cheesecakes. Promoted rapidly. Positions held were:

Line Administrator: Responsible for accounting for ingredients used in production. Ensuring ingredients and packing materials were supplied by Stores Department as required. Compiling rotas for staff rotation daily and completing all personnel documents.

Line Trainer: Responsible for training staff employed to run and sanitize a new manufacturing line.

Stand-in Line Co-ordinator: Responsible for all aspects of Cheesecake Production with a team of 26.

Training Co-ordinator (factory wide): Responsible for introduction of a Modular Training Programme for all employees (450), including, Management, Engineering Staff, and Administration Staff. Responsible for the planning and presentation of subject matters (these being; Personal Development, Health and Safety, Hygiene and Production) Developed recording and computer control system using Lotus Spreadsheets. Initiated, authored and presented a day long induction course for all new personnel.

Stand-in Health and Safety Officer: Responsible for dealing with all Health and Safety Issues factory wide whilst the Safety Officer was on a Training Course, and again for varying periods whilst he was absent presenting and instructing at other factories within the group.

Transport Co-ordinator: Responsible for planning and producing the transport schedules required for the shipment of all products manufactured at the plant and for ingredients arriving. Created recording and control system using Lotus with WYSIWYG.

Hygiene Supervisor: Responsible for Effluent Plant Management, Pest Control, Waste Disposal, Purchasing and Control of all cleaning materials and chemicals required by the factory. Responsible for control and maintenance of all CIP systems and other Cleaning Machinery. Created the framework for the introduction of written Cleaning Procedures throughout the factory on 5 lines (using Lotus WordPro and Freelance Graphics). Supervisory role over all daytime office and factory cleaning staff (4) and effluent and waste control operatives (4). Introduced new Safety Measures regarding the handling and use of Chemicals throughout the factory. Redesigned the flow structure for the handling of waste materials which included the purchase of new machinery and the production and presentation of new procedures for safe handling and cleaning of this equipment.

Oct 1998

Suffering from severe back pain I was signed off sick by my local Doctor. In February 1999, following advice given by both my Doctor and Osteopath, I resigned my job. Both had told me that, if I resumed my former occupation (I was at that time a Line Trainer on the Night Shift - which necessitated a great deal of physical labor), my condition would only worsen.

Cornwall Technical College - 3 O Levels, Grade 3 in English Language, English Literature, and History.

Writers Training Course - whilst a member of the Royal Navy.

Personal History and Achievements

A member of a large family (one of 6 children), I worked from an early age (11) during summers and after school, thereby being able to help support the family when required.

Joined the Air Training Corps at the age of 14, remaining a member for 2 years prior to joining the Royal Navy.

Constituency Secretary for the Liberal Democrats of Torridge and North Devon. The party won the seat at the second attempt, against entrenched opposition. The Conservatives having held it as a "safe" seat for many years.

Appointed Youth Co-ordinator for the Royal British Legion, Okehampton Branch. Represented the Branch as conference delegate.

Founded the South West American Football Youth League. Served as Chairman for two years.

Founded, coached and led the Okehampton Legionnaires to the Championship of the above League.

Overcame a nervous breakdown, following which I returned to McVities starting back at the bottom, rose to become Night Shift Line Trainer.

Top
